Turkey Song Activity!

Happy Math and Music Monday!

I really can’t believe it’s the second week in November! Can you? We went to the store on Sunday and Sister P asked when it was time to make our Christmas list and put up our tree. With the stores putting Christmas up so early, it even makes me feel like we are already behind on Christmas, and we haven’t even had Thanksgiving. Is anyone else feeling this way? With that being said, I do really love this time of year. I love the all the activities and all the opportunities for family time.

I am excited to share with you this week a simple Math and Music activity that combines music and the Number Line! I will talk more in a moment why the number line is SO important… be sure to check that out at the end. I know this time of year is super busy, but this activity is simple and fun. All you need is a few sheets of paper, a marker and our turkey song, “Hand Jive Turkey!” But before we get going, I found this quote and thought I would share it with you…

Fun Fact

“Children are born musicians, dancers, artists and storytellers and the opportunities for healthy development are endless. We just have to provide the canvas, the paper, the paints, the materials and the welcoming environment, setting the stage for creativity, learning and fun.” – Gari Stein

I love this because it reminds me that children are born with all kinds of opportunities and possibilities. I believe it is our job as parents to help set them up for success. Even when I feel like we don’t have time during the week for a short math and music activity, I remind myself that it really doesn’t take that long and could have a HUGE lasting impact on their development. So we don’t have time not to!

Ok – so on to this week’s activity. These activities are partly my planning and partly the girls’. When I told them what we were doing, they were excited but wanted to add a drawing of the turkey to it. I just love it when they want to take it to that next level of learning. It makes my heart smile. I hope you’re seeing this in your home too.

So let’s get started!

Step 1: Take your pieces of papers and make some number cards. You will need 0-6. I cut the paper and made them before we started our math and music time, but I think it would be a great activity to have your children help make the number cards. They could (with help from a grown-up) cut the paper and help write the numbers.

Step 2:  Time to make the number line. The girls really loved this part. We talked about what number comes first. They first said one, but then after looking at all the numbers we talked about the fact that the number lines start with zero! So we started there and made our number line 0 – 6.

Sister P found the Zero! Sister K is ready with the ONE!
Our Number Line! **Special Tip: build your number line with a little space between the numbers.

Step 3: Now let’s add the music! Play the song below, “Turkey Activity Song” Make sure to start on zero. Jump or step to each number as the song progresses. Moving up the number line.

Number 0: Starting point

Number 1: Hand Jive Turkey sing your song

Number 2: Dance around the whole day long

Number 3: Bounce and turn and jump and jive

Number 4: Hand Jive Turkey come alive

Number 5: Shuffle step it – Step, step, step it

Number 6: Hand Jive Turkey …… Yeah!

(Interlude: Dance like a turkey and make your way back to the zero to do it again)

After the second time through… We did our best turkey moves to the end of the song.

Ready to start - Waiting on Zero!

Step 4: Make your own Turkey time. This was what the girls added to our math and music activity time. They wanted to draw a picture of what their turkey looked like. I love that they wanted to use their creativity, don’t you!?

Educational Wrap up:  Did you know… “Number lines provide a mental strategy for addition and subtraction. It’s easy to think of them as a kind of crutch for the struggling, but not so. Research has shown they’re important because they promote good mental arithmetic strategies.” – Komodo Math
