Top 3 Ideas for Summer!

Happy Math and Music Monday!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! This weekend was a crazy one for us. We wrapped up the March Month of Birthday Madness (good madness) and got to spend some time with our wonderful family and friends. I am so VERY grateful for each and every one of them. You know the saying, “it takes a village?” It’s so true and I am SO very grateful for our village.

Ok… Is anyone else thinking about SUMMER yet? It is on my mind. It’s seems like all the summer signups are now open, and it’s time to start making some decisions and get a plan because it will be here before we know it! So, this week’s blog is focused on my top 3 picks for how to keep the learning going this summer!

Fun Fact

“About 2 months of reading skills and 2.5 months of math skills are lost over a single summer.” – thinkstretch.com

When doing some research for what to do with our girls this summer, I came upon this quote. To tell you the truth, I was a little taken back at how much can be lost. Whether your children are in mother’s day out, pre-school, pre-k or in first grade like our girls, I think it is so important to keep the learning always going and a part of your everyday life. And no, I don’t mean with a worksheet or something super hard or not fun. I mean making it part of what you are already doing, or making it an adventure to try something new, or to visit a new place. You could even visit an old place with a new learning concept being the focus. We love to go to our local Science Museum. We have been there many, many times… but one day we decided (because of the Triangle Video) to make our focus for the visit to find ALL the different triangles or ways to make triangles. It made the whole place new again. It was so, so fun. I plan to take the girls again soon with the focus being Fast and Slow! It really is so fun to see something old with a totally new perspective.

Ok – so here are my 3 picks for keeping the learning going this summer! I know these 3 things will be on my list to do this summer. I hope you find the list super helpful too!

Pick #1 – Always Have a Back Up!

Ok… Who doesn’t LOVE Target? I know I do. I also really love the Target Dollar Spot. Right now, at our local Target store there all ALL kinds of great learning tools. I like these because everything is under $5 dollars. I like to pick up one or two things at a time and then save them at home. This way, when it gets too hot to play outside or we just need a break from our normal activities, I have a go-to back up activity. This has been a wonderful secret weapon of mine. Trust me, it has been a lifesaver. See below what I got and some of the other fun items they have right now.

Don't these look like FUN!

Pick #2 – The Library!

If you haven’t already… find your local library ASAP! It can be a wonderful place. Our girls LOVE to read and love to pick out new books to read or have us read together as a family. Our local library also has a wonderful reading program to encourage reading throughout the summer. They also have wonderful activities and programs too! Be sure to put your local library in your plans for this summer!

We LOVE to read! It's so important to read together 20 min. per day during the summer to keep the learning going!

Pick #3 – Ally Dog Depot!

Ok, so you know we LOVE IT and use allydogdepot.com ALL the time. We hope you love it too! As you know we have released a new learning video and activities each month since July 2018! I can’t believe we are in our 11th almost 12th month.   Our goal with these videos, activities and blogs is to help provide tools to make math and music a part of your everyday life. If you go back to my first blogs, this is how I made it through last summer. We started the week with Math and Music Monday. Monday’s were the day I introduced a new concept/topic, and then we expanded the learning on that topic throughout the week. We had a LOT of fun. I hope, if you haven’t already, that you go check them out. It was maybe my favorite summer so far.

Don't forget you can make Ally Dog Depot an icon on your Apple device and take the learning on the go! For more information, be sure to check out the blog post called, "Ally Dog Depot - Shortcut!"

Well, that’s it. Those are my top 3 picks for keeping the learning going this summer. What are your great ideas or ways you make it through the summer? I would love to add some of your ideas to my list! I hope you will take time to share on our social media pages. (links below)
