School Program Highlight!

Happy Math and Music Monday!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. This is a very special Math and Music Monday! I’m so excited to share this week’s blog with you. I love, love, LOVE hearing stories and seeing photos of both families and teachers using the math and music videos and activities! This week we are going to learn more about how a pre-school in Norman, OK is not only using our school program but also the NEW the videos to bring the lessons to life!

Fun Fact

“The first 5 years have so much to do with how the next 80 turn out.” – Bill Gates Sr.

Wow, this is a good one. Often, I see the same quotes over and over, but this is a new one for me. When I first read this, it really made me stop and think. We are laying the foundation for our children, right now, every day. I know I’m not perfect at it, but I’m going to do my best to help set our girls up for success. The most encouraging thing for me is one – it doesn’t have to be big major hard things that take a lot of time or resources. It can be as easy as having a conversation with your child or include them in cooking dinner. Even finding triangles or simple patterns while riding in the car or when you color with your child is a start. Two, we can do this together! My goal for these videos/activities, this Ally Dog Depot website, and my Instagram page is for it to be a community of sharing, encouraging and learning together! This is also why I’m so excited to have this blog to share with you what others are doing with these videos/activities in the hopes it will inspire you for your home or classroom.

Ok, let’s take a look at what is happening in a wonderful place called Cochran Music Preschool in Norman, OK! Cochran Music Preschool is a wonderful place. I first met them in 2012 (I really can’t believe it has been that long, lol) when they purchased our math and music program, All Aboard, the Music and Math Connection for their school. Over the years I have had the opportunity to visit and/or check in with them to see how it’s going. Several times I was even able to bring our precious “real” Ally Dog for the students to meet and wave hello. It truly is a special place!

I reached out to Kim, the owner and amazing teacher at the school, to see how it was going this year and how they liked and are using the new videos and activities. She sent me some super fun videos and photos of the students watching THEIR favorite new video, “The Monster/Mouse!”

Kim had this to say about the video and activities… I love how she explained how they are implementing into their classroom!

“The kids were really able to grasp the concept with the visual aid and laughed and laughed at both the characters when they did their parts. We were easily able to carry it over into the classroom giving each child either a mouse or a monster card. Then we have them listen and hold up the card that matches the music/sound.   From there, making patterns was a breeze! After making patterns with the mouse and monster we used various items in the classroom. I like that it not only taught patterns but also loud and soft.”

She also had this great question, which I think many of you might have if you already have the All Aboard Program/Curriculum in your schools/classrooms. Her question was, “How do I know what video goes with a particular unit/stop?” Or “How and where do they fit in the classroom program/curriculum?”  This is a GREAT question! Before I give you our ideas, I have to say… I SO appreciate this question. This is why I LOVE our community. These kinds of questions or feedback make what we do better. Without them, it wouldn’t be as good as it can be. So PLEASE keep these stories and questions coming! It’s why we do what we do!

Ok – So let’s get to the answer… I got with our amazing team and here are our ideas of how to incorporate the videos/activities into the All Aboard School Program/Curriculum.

We have launched the following videos up to this point: Kangaroo (steady beats), Triangle (shape), All Aboard Music Video, Ally Dog Song Music Video, Inchworm (measurement), Starfish (shape), High/Low (sounds), Monster/Mouse (patterns) and Monkey in the Middle (middle concept). Some of these fit perfectly into the current school program like “Monster/Mouse,” so let’s talk about some of the other videos…

These music videos, “All Aboard!” and “Ally Dog Song,” are a perfect connection to the classroom program. I would suggest that you use these music videos when they are listed in the books as an enhancement/visual aid or another fun way to get the wiggles out.

A great way to incorporate the video “Monkey in the Middle” would be to expand/build upon another concept like patterns, as an example. I would say something like, “Can we find the middle of the pattern?” Or “We know what high sounds sound like and what low sounds sound like…but what is in the middle? What does that sound like?” Another perfect way to incorporate the middle concept in the school program would be to use the floor graph. Remember, the middle (yellow line) or better known as the “boogie” line is the MIDDLE of the floor graph!

A great way to incorporate the two shape videos would be to again expand/build upon the making of patterns with the different shapes. As always, you could also use the math and music videos in a unit you are already doing in your other classroom curriculum/units on shapes to add a Math and Music spin to it! I would be willing to bet the students will not only love it, but they will get the concept faster because you are incorporating the concepts in a cross-curricular way.

A great way to incorporate the “Inchworm” video would be to use it with the Mountain Stop with Freddie Fast and Sammy Slow.   Both are dealing with concept measurement!

A great way to incorporate the “Kangaroo” video would be to use it with our classroom program characters, Buster Bee and Betty Beat! They are all dealing with the concept Steady Beat. Plus, remember that almost every song as a “heart beat” or steady beat!

Don’t forget, we are a community… I can’t wait to hear the stories and the other amazing ideas you all come up with in your classrooms or home! Thank you SO MUCH to the amazing Cochran Music Preschool for your support and feedback! Thank you for letting us share your story with our followers!
