Extension Activities: High/Low

Happy Math and Music Monday!

Have you heard? Just this past week, we launched the NEW High/Low Sounds Video and Activities, and if you haven’t watched it yet… what are you waiting for? It is SO fun and your children are going to LOVE it. I know we sure do!

This new video is so fun and does a great job setting up this new learning concept. I love how we not only get to hear the difference of high and low sounds, but also we get to see it. We do this on purpose! Doing activities like this will help your child develop their spatial-temporal reasoning! How cool is that?

Fun Fact

“Curriculum should help children make deeper and fuller understanding of their own experience.” – Lilian Katz, Ph.D.

This week’s quote is a good one. I saw this and thought it was perfect for this week, because I could not agree more. My goal as a teacher and a mom is to help set up our girls for learning success. I want them to take what we learn together and make it their own. I think any parent does. Doing activities like this will help do this very thing. That is the power of Music!

Ok – let’s get into this week’s FUN High/Low activities! I have also included some fun extension activities to make the learning a little more challenging for your older children. I know my girls LOVED it!

Step 1: If you haven’t, go watch and do the new High/Low Sounds Video and Activities.

Sister P and Sister K watching the High/Low Video for the first time!
Raising our hands HIGH when the music, Connor & Ally Dog go high on the roller coaster!

Awesome! Wasn’t that so fun? I would love to hear how it went. Please be sure to share on our Facebook page (Ally Dog Depot) or tag me on Instagram @mathandmusicmommy.

Step 2: Now that you have completed the activities for the High/Low Sounds video and activities, you are ready to extend the learning fun! Using our same Bird and Cow faces (we have 2 sets because we have two girls, but if you just have one child, you might want to print 2 copies of this page or draw/make your own something to represent the high and low sounds) we listened to the following examples that are different than the ones we have heard before. Make sure you have your listening ears on! Lol.

Sister K and Sister P coloring the Cow/Bird activity sheets.
The bird goes high in the sky when we hear a high sound!
The cow goes low to the ground (or red dirt in Oklahoma, lol). Thank you Sister P and K for pointing that out.
Some of you might be wondering what we did for the middle parts... well, we created our own movements and ways to show the middle.

Step 3: Take the learning out into your world around you! We went on a high/low Scavenger Hunt! We took our clipboard and made tally marks as we heard different high and low sounds. As you can see we had a lot of fun!

How many High sounds and Low sounds can you find? We used tally marks to keep track of our findings.

Thanks for stopping by!

We hope you all have a wonderful Math and Music Monday or even a wonderful Math and Music WEEK! Be sure to follow along this week for High/Low Fun!  As always, we would love to hear from you on how things are going! Be sure to follow us on Instagram @mathandmusicmommy and Facebook: Ally Dog Depot. Oh, and if you like what you see, please share with a friend!
