Five Little Pumpkins!

Happy Math & Music Monday!

I hope everyone’s Monday is off to a great start! I am so excited… It finally feels like FALL outside. I really love this time of year, don’t you? I thought it would be fun for this week’s Math and Music Monday to get into the spirit of fall with one of our favorite books from when the girls were little, “Five Little Pumpkins!” It’s the perfect Math and Music fall activity! We hope you love it too!

Fun Fact

“Knowing what must be done does away with fear.” – Rosa Parks

I found this quote this week and just fell in love with it. What a powerful quote. To me, this quote is saying if we understand something and know why we need to do it, it takes away the fear. I think this can apply to our lives in so many different ways. As a parent, for example, I have found that explaining to the girls what is going to happen or the “plan” for the day takes away any anxiety they might be feeling about the day. I have also found that helping the girls understand why it’s important for them to understand different mathematical concepts (for an example) and how we use them in our everyday lives helps them want/more willing to learning them. I’m not perfect at this, but this is something I work on daily. I know that helping the girls understand the “why” will be an important life skill.

Ok… Let’s get on to this week’s Math and Music activity!

When the girls were little, they LOVED the songbook/storybook “Five Little Pumpkins!” I love that we get to sing the story and that it’s a fun way for children to experience subtraction.

First, we read the book. It was so fun because now the girls are old enough to read the book to me. This story can also be sung… that’s what makes it so fun.

Reading "Five Little Pumpkins" to each other.

Second, we talked about how many total pumpkins there are in the story. (5 pumpkins) I found these super fun foam pumpkins at that Target Dollar spot.   They were perfect for reinforcing different number groupings. I think it is always important to have some hands-on activities when working with numbers and counting. The girls loved counting and sorting the foam pumpkins.

Third, we came up with a new math game. The girls would close their eyes and I would place a different number of pumpkins on the counter. Then they would open their eyes and tell me how many they see. We had so much fun. This was the perfect way to practice the different number groupings. They even got in on the fun doing it for each other and me! It’s not as easy as it looks. Lol

Sister K's turn to play!

For our final activity, the girls REALLY wanted to draw pumpkin faces on the different pumpkins. Are they the cutest!?

This Math and Music activity was the perfect way to practice mathematical

thinking and number sense. It was also super fun to use pumpkins to really get fall going.

If you liked this activity… I know you will LOVE this week’s Math and Music video: “Band Practice.” If you haven’t watched it yet or done the activities… go check it out TODAY! It is all about the math concept: ADDITION! (which goes great with subtraction!) lol
