Extension Activities: Starfish!

Happy Math and Music Monday!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We sure did. This weekend we slowed down, played with our girls, and spent time with our friends and family. It was so nice to not be so rushed and crazy. I hope you all were able to do the same. Last week was an exciting week, though. If you haven’t heard already, last week we launched our 9th Math and Music video and activities. I hope you’ve seen it. It’s one of our very favorites! I’m also super excited about this week’s blog.   I can’t wait to share with you our experiences doing the new Starfish Video and Activities!

Fun Fact

“Children learn as they play. Most importantly in play children learn how to LEARN!” – O Fred Donaldson

This week’s quote is a good one. I do realize I say this every week, lol, but I do LOVE this quote. This quote is perfect because this is our very goal with our videos and activities. We design our videos and activities to set up the learning environment and then take the learning off the device and put it into practice in the world around you. Our goal is to have these math and music topics/concepts become a part of your family, everyday lives, and for sure playtime! I think as adults it’s easy for us to forget the importance of doing something over and over and over. To us, it might seem silly (or even sometimes annoying) but really, it’s an important part of learning. It’s how our children make sense of the world and truly build their understanding of things. This is exactly why it’s important to play and include these topics during playtime.

Ok – let’s get into this week’s FUN activities with the NEW Starfish video! I’ve also included some fun extension activities. I know my girls LOVED them!

Step 1: If you haven’t already done so, go watch the new Starfish Video and do the Activities. Here’s us doing the activities:

First we watched the Starfish video!
Then we listened to the "Starfish Song" and counted with the music. We counted to five, four times. Isn't that 5/4 time amazing!
We also drew a star in the sky! That's trickier than you might think! lol
Then it was time to color, number and cut out our starfish!
Sister P and Sister K insisted on making a full starfish family! So I printed 3 copies of the page for each girl. lol

Awesome! Wasn’t that so fun? I would love to hear how it went for you. Please be sure to share on our Facebook page (Ally Dog Depot) or tag me on Instagram @mathandmusicmommy.

Step 2: Now that you have completed the activities for the Starfish video, you’re ready to extend the learning fun! For my girls, we went on a star scavenger hunt. Ok, to be totally honest, I had some errands I really had to get done, so we took the learning with us, and really had a lot of fun. I find myself pulling out these different learning concepts and questions when we are waiting in line at a store or even at a restaurant. Asking the simple question, “Can we find any stars?” or “What other shapes can we find?” changes the whole waiting process. I would love to hear how you are using them. Ok, so here’s what we found…

Look at all the "Stars" we found!

Step 3: Another super fun activity our girls came up with, all on their own, was finding creative ways to make the star shape. Below is a photo of my favorite star they came up with, but for the full effect, please go to our social pages to take a look. They even sing the song! Lol.

The girls figured out how to make a "Star" working together!

Thanks for stopping by!

We hope you all have a wonderful Math and Music Monday or even a wonderful Math and Music WEEK!

As always, we would love to hear from you on how things are going or where you were able to STARS in your world! Be sure to follow us on Instagram @mathandmusicmommy and Facebook: Ally Dog Depot. Oh, and if you like what you see, please share with a friend, grandparent or teacher you know!
