Extension Activities: Monster/Mouse (patterns)

Happy Math and Music Monday!

Have you heard? Just this past week, we launched the NEW Monster/Mouse (Beethoven’s Symphony #5, 1st Mvt. Excerpt.) VIDEO, and if you haven’t watched it yet… what are you waiting for? It is SO fun and your children are going to LOVE it!

This new Monster/Mouse video and activities are also the inspirations for this week’s Math and Music Monday activities! I think I say this every time, but I LOVE this activity. I loved it when I was teaching in the classroom with my math and music students, and I love it now even more with my own children. It is TRULY amazing what children can do when given the opportunity. I have seen it time after time; they will step up to the challenge. I love this set of activities because it helps children REALLY get and understand patterns in a totally different way. “Why is that,” you ask? Because of the way we use the structure of the music!

Fun Fact

“I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” – Plato

WOW! This week’s quote is a good one. I wish I had the words to express the excitement I get when I see our girls recognize and apply what they are learning in their own world. I realize this is a strong statement, but I am going to say it… I promise that if you will do these activities and stay consistent with our Math and Music Monday activities with your child you will see it too. I am reminded time after time the power of MUSIC!

Ok – let’s get into this weeks AMAZING and FUN extension activities for the Monster and Mouse. I know my girls LOVED it!

Sister P and Sister K coloring and watching Monster/Mouse (again)!

Step 1: If you haven’t, go watch and do the new Monster/Mouse Video and activities.

Monster/Mouse Video and activities

Awesome! Wasn’t that so fun? I would love to hear how it went. Please be sure to share on our Facebook page (Ally Dog Depot) or tag me on Instagram @mathandmusicmommy.

Step 2: Now that you have completed the activities for the Monster/Mouse video and activities, you are ready to extend the learning fun! With your patterning cards (don’t worry, if you have lost them, click the link below to download them again,) review the pattern of the Monster/Mouse Music.                                      (monster – mouse – monster – mouse)

Making the pattern while listening to the music!

Step: 3 Great job! Guess what? The monster and mouse are now all mixed up and can’t remember their pattern. Can you help them?

  • Play each of the following tracks individually. Have your child listen carefully and place the pattern cards to match the music heard.
  • Replay the track for your child to check their work.
  • Proceed on to the next track and repeat the procedure.

What we did was this: we did this activity as written, but then, we went back to it a little later and made our own patterns, without listening to the music first.   I love to do it this way because the girls get to make their own pattern and then we get to hear what their pattern, that they made sounds like. IT IS SO COOL! They are arranging Beethoven, people!!! How cool is that?!?

We have a music track for every possible pattern your child can make… Please see below:

Track 01: Monster – Mouse – Monster – Mouse

Track 02: Mouse – Monster – Mouse – Monster

Track 03: Monster- Monster – Mouse – Mouse

Track 04: Mouse – Mouse – Monster –Monster

 Track 05: Monster – Mouse – Mouse – Monster

Track 06: Mouse – Monster – Monster – Mouse

Thanks for stopping by!
